"We consider blue a neutral; it's such a classic color," says Jennifer Wundrow, one half of San Francisco-based Nest Design Co., which she founded with Heather Brock in 2008. This philosophy is on full display in a Mill Valley home the duo recently created for a young family relocating to the West Coast from New York.

"We wanted to bring in the bay from the inside out."

"The client loves that beachy, natural Nantucket feel," Wundrow explains. Luckily for them, though it's some 3,000 miles away, the landscape surrounding their new digs had a surprising amount in common with the East Coast island—namely, untouched nature and serene blue waters. "They have amazing views of the bay," says Brock. "So we really wanted to play off the blue and white and bring in the bay from the inside out."

Eagle-eyed, design-savvy viewers will likely notice something missing throughout the home: curtains. "They really didn't want window treatments to obscure from the views," says Wundrow. "They're kind of on the back side of this little bay between Tiburon and Sausalito. It's really just untouched feeling. They didn't want to obscure any of that."

So, the designers endeavored to translate that "beachy, Nantucket" feel to, what Wundrow calls, "the bright, airy, indoor-outdoor living that you get in California."

When the family brought on Nest, the designers had their work cut out for them—the home's previous style didn't exactly scream fresh and airy. "The style here before was...questionable, in my taste," admits Wundrow with a laugh. "They had wallpaper everywhere and it was really heavy, there were some weird arches in the molding—it was just too fussy. This is a young family; it's casual. It's supposed to feel fun but still have a sophisticated flair. We tried to not make it so fuddy duddy. We wanted to liven the space up."

After stripping the wallpaper, cutting back on some of the molding, and reimagining the color scheme in their "neutral" palette of white, beige, gray, and blue with plenty of natural materials, the home has a fresh new look befitting its surroundings.

Says Wundrow: "I think we succeeded in making it feel young and fresh, which is what the client was after." Agreed!
