FTC Raps ICANN’s Increased Number of Domain Names Plan - wisehumpertle

A project by the custodians of the Internet that volition dramatically increase the count of domains along the Net would relieve oneself consumers more vulnerable to online fraud and hinder the ability of law enforcement to bring cyber scammers to magistrate, according to a federal consumer watchdog agency.

The elaboration of generic spinning top-point domains (gTLDs)–the portion of a Web address to the right of the dot, such as .com, .net, .xxx, etc.–formed by the Net Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) could dramatically increment the opportunity for consumer fraud and make it easier for scam artists to manipulate the system to avoid being detected by law of nature enforcement authorities, the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) said in a letter to ICANN.

"A rapid, exponential expansion of gTLDs has the potential to overdraw both the vilification of the domain name organisation and the corresponding challenges we run into in tracking depressed Internet fraudsters," the FTC letter declared.

The Federal Trade Commission added that the increase in website names that could be certified in the new gTLDs would put "infinite opportunities" at the fingertips of scam artists, who take advantage of consumers through tactics such as using misspelled names to create copycat websites.

Applications for New World Name calling Accepted Starting January 12

ICANN is slated to start accepting applications for the new generic domains on Jan 12. In front IT approves any of those applications, the FTC is urging the Internet's administration to take these steps to protect consumers:

• Implement the inexperient program as a pilot program and well subjugate the number of generic clear-level domains that are introduced as a result of the first application round;
• Strengthen ICANN's contractual compliance program, in particular by hiring additional compliancy staff;
• Develop a new current program to reminder consumer issues that arise during the first circular of implementing the new gTLD political program;
• Assess each recent proposed generic top-raze field's risk of consumer harm as separate of the valuation and approval process; and
• Improve the truth of Whois data, which is used to identify WHO owns a arena, including imposing a registrant confirmation requirement.

"If ICANN fails to address these issues responsibly, the introduction of new gTLDs could pose a significant terror to consumers and undermine consumer sureness in the Internet," the FTC warned in its letter.

Background

The inexperienced domain name dodging was announced by ICANN in June. It allows anyone to propose anything as a domain suffix, including suffixes in not-Latin alphabets, such as Arabic and Asian country. To apply for a suffix, though, an applicant has to spit up a not-refundable fee of $185,000.

Some critics of the plan argue it will bring chaos to the Internet–and with superb ground. "As it stands right right away, the vast majority of WWW surfers just understand the structure of a domain; near non-techie multitude equitable assume everything is dot-com," wrote JR Raphael in PC World.
